The Sea Teaches Its First Lesson in a Storm

I was in my early twenties when I embarked on my first long voyage. My confidence was high—I believed I had already mastered the sea. That belief remained, until I faced a sudden and severe northerly storm in the Aegean.

As the waves grew higher, I came to a simple realization: we are not the masters of the sea—the sea is our host. That day, I felt fear, but I did not run from it.

The captain on the bridge remained calm. He did not shout or panic. Every movement was measured and deliberate. In that moment, I understood that being a seafarer is not about raising your voice or appearing strong—it is about making the right decision at the right time.

As crew members, we carried out every task quietly and without hesitation, because the sea does not favor those who make noise.

A Lesson That Stays With You

After that voyage, I learned something I have never forgotten:
The sea teaches its first lesson in a storm.

If you face that lesson with courage and humility, the sea gradually accepts you. But if you approach it with arrogance, it does not forgive.
