Experience Floats, Not Certificates

Years ago, I was working on a luxury motor yacht. A new captain joined us—fully certified, highly educated, but with limited sea experience. We understood this immediately during the first maneuver.

On paper, he knew everything. But he couldn’t feel how the wind affected the vessel.

One day, while attempting to dock in a tight marina, he panicked. He overused the engine, and the yacht began to move in an unintended direction. We stepped in quickly and prevented the situation from escalating.

Afterwards, the captain withdrew to his cabin and reflected in silence.

The next day, he told us: “I will listen to the sea more.”

That was the day he truly began to become a captain. Because at sea, it is not the certificate that matters—it is the experience that keeps you afloat.
