Competent Mate for 40m Modern Classic Sailing Yacht

✔️Mate 40 M Modern Classic SY Private and Charter Start location: Spain Start date: Late September/early October 2026 – flexible for the right candidate Programme:Yard period, sailing trials, Mediterranean cruising and potential regattas We are seeking a competent, hands-on Mate to join an approximately 40m modern classic sailing yacht in a permanent position.
The yacht is approaching launch following an extensive yard period. The successful candidate will initially assist with final deck preparations, including bending on sails, rigging and preparing the yacht for sailing trials.
The yacht will remain in Northern Spain until approximately mid-December before moving to another Mediterranean yard for the winter. The anticipated programme then includes owner cruising in Greece from June.
This role would suit either an experienced Mate or a strong sailing yacht deckhand ready to step up into a leadership position.
This is a genuinely sailing-focused programme. Applicants must be passionate about sailing and confident in all aspects of yacht handling. Please do not apply if you do not have a strong sailing background.
Key responsibilities Sailing and deck operations
Lead and assist with sailing manoeuvres
Support the Captain during docking, anchoring and passage planning
Stand navigational watches as required
Oversee safe and efficient deck operations
Assist with launch preparations, rigging and bending on sails
Maintain the rig, deck hardware and sailing systems
Participate in sailing trials and deliveries
Manage and execute a structured deck-maintenance programme
Complete varnishing, paintwork, stainless-steel care, teak maintenance and general upkeep
Maintain the yacht to a high standard throughout the yard and operational periods
Ensure the yacht is presented immaculately for guests
Crew support and leadership
Provide direction and support to the deckhand
Promote safe working practices and a positive onboard culture
Assist with safety drills and onboard procedures
Guest interaction
Be confident, approachable and professional with guests
Support guest participation in sailing when appropriate
Assist with watersports and tender operations
Requirements
Strong sailing background essential
Previous experience aboard a 25m+ sailing yacht
Yachtmaster Offshore preferred; commercially endorsed advantageous
Valid STCW and ENG1
Confident tender driver
Good knowledge of sailing systems and deck maintenance
Strong practical and organisational skills
